Ladies have been living above St Annes District Club since 1931.

After the club agreed to allow the admission of lady members into their new premises, the upstairs rooms became their exclusive home.

And as they say the rest is history, but a 95 year history that the menfolk of the DC know very little about.

Suffice to say that the ladies section have been our paying tenants for all that time, and of course at some stage there was also a name change to the Ladies Bridge Club.

Sixteen bylaws

At the outset a DC subcommittee produced a list of 16 bylaws for the ladies, who had to be 21 years and over. These included an entrance fee of £1 1s and an annual subscription of £3 2s.

It was made clear that the ladies would have exclusive use of the first floor rooms, and no access to any other parts. No intoxicating liquors were to be permitted on the first floor.

The hours of opening were stipulated as 10am to 11pm daily except Sundays. Membership was to be limited to 100 and the ladies could appoint their own stewardess or waitress.

The Ladies Bridge Club may have dwindled both in popularity and membership numbers in more recent times, but it remains an important part in the District Club's history.
